How to Care for a Birman Cat

1. Regular Deworming and Vaccination
  • Ensure your Birman cat receives regular vaccinations, including for rabies. If your cat is bitten or scratched, seek medical attention promptly.
  • Deworm your cat on a routine basis. If you don’t plan to breed your cat, consider spaying or neutering.
2. Caution with Feeding
  • Keep human food out of your cat’s reach to prevent it from eating potentially harmful items.
  • Limit liver feedings to 1 – 2 times a week to avoid health issues.
  • During growth, pregnancy, or nursing, you can feed your Birman cat some raw meat, liver, and milk to prevent vitamin deficiencies. If your cat has oral ulcers or is underweight, raw meat or liver can also be beneficial.
3. Balanced Training Approach
  • When training young Birmans, combine strictness with kindness. Set high standards but also be patient and rewarding.
  • Avoid physical punishment and handle cats gently. To pick up a cat, grab the scruff of its neck with your right hand and support its body with your left hand.
4. Care for Pregnant Cats
  • Provide a balanced diet to avoid obesity, especially in late pregnancy, to prevent birthing difficulties.
  • Keep the environment quiet and dimly lit during delivery. Avoid unnecessary attention or touching.
  • After birth, minimize disturbances to the mother cat and her kittens. Keep the birthing box clean and avoid moving it or handling the kittens unnecessarily.
5. Managing Cat Loss
  • Properly dispose of a deceased cat’s body through burial or cremation, especially if death was due to infectious disease or poisoning.
  • Safely dispose of the cat’s belongings to prevent the spread of disease and environmental pollution.
If you notice any abnormal behavior in your cat, consult a veterinarian promptly. Due to the rarity of Birman cats, it’s advisable to research their care requirements, including lifestyle and common health issues, before deciding to adopt one.
